Senior Tax Associate

Job Description
The Senior Tax Associate will report to the Director of Finance & Tax on tax compliance matters, and the CFO on investment tax matters. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Improve and/or maintain current tax processes
o Take ownership of tax compliance data, tracking and inputting Schedule K-1’s, following up with investment managers for questions, and compiling data for trend analyses
o Assist with managing and overseeing GEM’s relationship with external service providers, supplying data, answering questions, and reviewing files
o Prepare 1099’s for all of GEM’s fund payments
o Assist with the research and preparation of GEM’s ASC 740 analyses and FBAR reporting requirements
o Field and research investor tax questions, including UBTI, state, and general K-1 questions
o Manage and answer federal and state tax notices
o Research and implement new tax compliance technologies

• Enhance tax practice
o Stay up-to-date with changes in foreign, domestic, state and local tax laws
o Proactively evaluate and communicate tax law implications for GEM investors and investments, especially with respect to foreign investments
o Lead and/or assist with tax projects that can affect fund and investor performance including foreign tax reclaims, treaty benefits, and new investment structuring
o Research and understand UBTI generation within our portfolio and the effect on investment returns, and evaluate implications of new UBTI regulations

Required Qualifications:
• CPA and/or related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field
• 2-4 years’ experience
Required Attributes:
• Individual must be detail oriented, organized, and able to handle multiple tasks or projects
• Strong written and verbal communicator with the ability to interpret and discuss tax rules and implications with GEM colleagues and clients
• Ability to work autonomously, but remain highly collaborative and effectively liaise with various internal and external stakeholders
• Willing and excited to learn – someone who is curious, engaging, takes initiative to grow, and asks thoughtful
