Charlotte is the strongly preferred location for this position but the Manager will consider other regional headquarter locations within the Duke Energy territory – Raleigh – NC, St. Petersburg – FL, Cincinnati – OH, Plainfield – IN.

Summary

This Lead/Principal Integrated Planning Analyst position will focus on development and deployment of innovative new system planning integration analytics and optimization methods needed to support the Integrated Systems & Operations Planning (ISOP) group. Planning analytics efforts in ISOP will span generation, transmission and distribution business operations and will support long range plans and technology assessments for all viable resource alternatives. This position is responsible for providing leadership and technical expertise to other analysts within the Section as well as other parts of the company. This position will be responsible for the supervision, coordination and at development of analytic methods for various projects impacting the utility’s integrated system plans and for developing and completing detailed, complex analysis projects required for ISOP development. The analyses performed within this job requires experience and a comprehensive understanding in one or more of the system planning discipline areas (generation, transmission and/or distribution) as well as financial modeling concepts and knowledge of physical system operations. Areas of modeling and analytic responsibilities include, but are not limited to, potential new central and distributed energy projects, , energy technology assessments, resource mix transformation and optimization, analyses of resource investment alternatives across the utility lines of business and impact studies for new policy and emerging regulatory issues. Specific examples of such work include technical and economic comparison of resource alternatives, revenue requirements analysis, economic carrying cost calculations and analysis of environmental rules and regulations and regulatory compliance obligations. This position also requires an understanding of corporate strategy and an ability to support formulation of strategic objectives. Regulatory responsibilities will include the preparation of formal regulatory filings, the provision of written testimony and responding to intervenor interrogatory requests and may involve testifying before the utilities commission. Superior communication and project management skills are requisite to this position. This position will coordinate and inform key stakeholders in analysis and strategy development and establish processes to ensure timely completion of assignments and implementation of the resulting plans.

Responsibilities

Provide technical and project leadership and overall management of projects that address long-term utility system needs and integrated system operations. Ensure coordination and timely communication with all stakeholders, including data providers and output recipients.

Provide technical leadership and project management for integrated plan optimization required for input into required regulatory filings. Ensure coordination and timely communication with all stakeholders, including data providers and output recipients.

Provide technical direction and manage performance of special studies related to the integrated system plan, such as strategic system plan studies, grid and supply resource upgrade and retirement options, system impacts for growth of distributed resources and system reliability analyses.

Provide technical review of all data supplied for the integrated system planning process and work with suppliers to ensure consistency with planning needs.

Prioritize projects and workflow and review all work products for accuracy and consistency with customer needs. Ensure all analysts within the section have proper knowledge and tools to ensure accurate and detailed work.

Provide direct oral and written testimony along with associated written interrogatory responses as required to support regulatory filings; this includes coordinating and reviewing testimony of others within the department. Coordinate responses to data requests from Utilities Commission staffs and stakeholders, including public staffs, and reliability council staffs.

Key skills, abilities and experience

Technical and organizational skills and clearly demonstrated work experience commensurate with this level of performance.

Extensive experience in financial analysis, project modeling, rate making, and/or generation resource planning.

Expertise in analytical, problem solving and financial evaluation skills.

Expertise in regulated utility financial operations including rate making, capital and cost recovery.

Some experience working with state and federal regulatory agencies.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Basic / Required Qualifications – Lead Level

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, accounting, finance, economics or a related field of study and 7 plus years of work related experience.

Basic / Required Qualifications – Principal Level

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, accounting, finance, economics or a related field of study and 10 plus years of work related experience.

Desired Qualifications

Advanced degree such as MBA, MS, or PhD in engineering, business, accounting, finance, economics or a related field

Expertise in power plant and grid operations.

Industry experience in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable resources.

Experience in the fuels, transmission, forecasting or other department directly related to resource planning.

Production cost modeling and/or expansion plan modeling for vertically integrated utilities.

Experience with long term planning for transmission, distribution and/or customer programs.
